Today I had the honor of photographing Kevin McKay’s funeral procession in downtown Barrie for the Barrie Advance newspaper. It was a day full of emotion for me – obvious excitement to photograph my first newspaper story, but also sorrow and sadness over the loss of this soldier. I did not know Kevin personally, but I have friends who knew him very well. With two old friends from Barrie in Afghanistan right now, it was certainly hard to keep the lump in my throat at check while I moved about capturing the events around me. It’s so sad to hear of the lives lost in Afghanistan…it’s heartbreaking to think he was only two days shy of returning home to his loved ones.
Kevin, may you rest in peace, and may the legacy you left of a life of sacrifice and dedication be an inspiration to the people of this country that you died for.
